Confidence, experience, and flexibility in English are acquired skills that need regular support and training. In the daily office environment, we are expected to be able to use the language technically and conversationally, both in written and spoken form. This course is aimed at engineers, using English in the workplace. Whilst they may possess excellent technical English, they are often keen to improve their general Business English for office conversation, meetings, and correspondence. This four-week language programme will help you develop your business English in an engineering or other context allowing you to use your professional language more accurately and confidently.
Date & Time: The course will be delivered over 4 weeks, taking place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 7:30pm – 12 hours total.

Location: This is a virtual classroom in which participants will require access to a webcam and microphone for live sessions with the trainer throughout the class. Participants will receive a login code via email from Engineers Ireland.

Who should attend?
The course is aimed at engineers and technicians with English as a second language who already possess an intermediate level of English but who are looking for the opportunity to improve and practise in a safe, focused environment.
Course Aim
This four-week language programme will help you develop your business English in an engineering context allowing you to use your professional language more accurately and confidently. The course has been designed to give you the space to use English in a relaxed yet professional space.
Through a series of targeted classes, students will become aware of useful grammar, phrases and skills that can improve their command of the language in a professional way that will help develop and boost fluency. Classes are interactive, encouraging discussion and speaking throughout.
Course Programme
- Day 1 – Describing Process: Listing common and effective key verbs. How to sound more professional linking sentences. Describing a process in your work in planning your current engineering projects.
- Day 2 – Technical language: Review key vocabulary to describe technical terms word formation techniques, looking at materials and uses. Explaining how materials are used.
- Day 3 –Reporting Skills: Looking at current national engineering plans and projects, choosing an Interactive case study and reporting on the aims and objectives. Defining words and collocations.
- Day 4 – Effective Responses: Using key phrases, how to answer questions, how to respond when you have no data. Responding to a live call using business language in context.
- Day 5 – Writing: Revision of writing skills, describing a work-related situation.
- Day 6 – Presenting: Focus on speaking. Key language to engage and present. Revise linking words. Pronunciation and error correction. Present to the group.
- Day 7 – Career goals and skills: What is your role, how do you interact within the team, setting targets and smart goals. Apply key verbs and vocabulary for your CV.
- Day 8 – Key Phrases: Looking at common phrasal verbs, revise idioms for meetings, revise key responses and colloquial language in a professional context.
