M20 Progress Critical to Economic Future of the Southern Region

Cork and Limerick Chambers win Top Award for M20 Collaboration

Limerick & Cork Chamber have won “Most Successful Policy Campaign” for the joint campaign ‘Gearing up for the M20 Cork – Limerick Motorway’ at the Chambers Ireland Annual Chamber Awards, sponsored by Zurich.

Dee Ryan, Limerick Chamber CEO, commented

“I’m pleased to accept this award in recognition of the commitment and determination of Cork & Limerick Chamber to secure the delivery of this vital piece of infrastructure.

A Multi-City approach is the only way to realise a counter-balance to Dublin, and connectivity by motorway between Irelands second and third largest cities is crucial.  It is imperative that the M20 project remains a priority and is not adversely impacted by cuts to budgets as has happened in the past. Our track record for delivering strategic infrastructure is on the line.

Limerick and Cork Chamber will continue to work closely with the local delivery team to ensure this project remains firmly on the national agenda.”

Speaking at the Chamber Awards, Conor Healy, CEO of Cork Chamber said,

“The M20 is a critical investment for the future of the Southern Region. Connecting Ireland’s second and third largest City regions is essential for sustainable economic development. The current route was already at 120% capacity in 2017 and is under increasing pressure. Ultimately, the M20 will support an additional 4,000-5,000 direct jobs and provide a gross exchequer impact of up to €128 million per annum.

The M20 would deliver improved capacity for both regional and international trading, completing the corridor along our western seaboard improving opportunities for trade and tourism. We must robustly commit to this infrastructural investment if we are serious about the development of our City Regions, as set out in Ireland 2040.”
