Ed Walsh Honoured for Educating FDI Attractive Workforce & Generations of Entrepreneurs
14 November 2015: Dr Ed Walsh, the founding president of the University of Limerick, was presented with the Limerick Chamber President’s Award at the Limerick Chamber President’s Dinner in the Limerick Strand Hotel last night (13/11/15).
Announcing the award, Catherine Duffy, President, Limerick Chamber said, “I am delighted to honour a man whose vision and ambition had a transformational impact on Irish higher education and helped the University of Limerick to achieve widespread recognition as a force for change and progress in Irish society.”
“Through his focus on developing genuine partnerships with outside organisations, particularly those in the industrial, business and professional worlds, Ed helped educate the type of workforce needed to attract foreign direct investment while at the same time creating generations of entrepreneurially-minded graduates. This foresight and focus on connecting the University to the real world has had a hugely significant impact, both economically and socially, for Limerick and indeed Ireland,” she continued.
Dr Walsh was presented with a unique sculpture crafted from bog oak by Joe O’Shea of ‘Banner Bog Oak’. Previous recipients of the President’s Award include Des O’Malley, Shannon Airport Chair, Rose Hynes (2013), Paddy O’Sullivan (2012) and Denis Brosnan (2011).
Over 430 of the region’s top business leaders and government officials attended the annual dinner and awards ceremony which featured a keynote address by Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD.
