Project Description

Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) has secured funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to revitalise O’Connell Street, from the Denmark Street junction as far as the Barrington Street junction (approx. 800 metres).

Project Objectives

The redevelopment of O’Connell Street is an opportunity to create a new public realm which can be a destination in itself and a facility for citizens and visitors that brings national and international attention to Limerick.

  • Limerick Chamber City Centre Business Forum has called for these redevelopment plans to be ambitious and visionary.
  • This Forum has submitted a Statement to LCCC concerning this redevelopment project.
  • The objective of this submission and ongoing consultation with the Council is to ensure the ultimate success of the LUCROC (Limerick Urban Centre Revitalisation – O’Connell Street) project.

As outlined in the Statement, Limerick Chamber City Centre Business Forum believes that this project plans needs to be:

  • Transformative and not incremental
    • With a focus on the features above ground, to ensure the creation of an iconic city centre
  • Ambitious and distinct
    • We urge the Council to establish the feasibility of erecting a canopy over the retail/hospitality section of O’Connell Street as part of the initial phase of this project
  • Inclusive
    • This project needs to create a public realm space which is animated and not sterile, and suitable for both day-time and evening uses
  • Robust and detailed
  • Holistic
    • This project needs to be linked to other city centre initiatives and projects, including Limerick 2030 and the Living Cities Initiative
  • Proactive in supporting Industry
Project Status

This project is currently at the pre-planning stage. As we approach the end of the project design phase, we need to proactively ensure the plan is ambitiously fit for purpose.

Limerick Chamber City Centre Business Forum will continue to consult with and provide input to relevant LCCC Departments to ensure successful delivery of this project for our citizens, businesses, potential investors and visitors alike.
