City of Culture Project Must be Given the Chance to Move Forward

6 January 2014:  Limerick Chamber remains strongly supportive of the City of Culture Project and its vision to enhance a vibrant city recognised nationally and internationally as a cultural centre.  This project provides Limerick with a unique opportunity to celebrate the arts, cultural and sporting life of Limerick and provide inspiration for all who live, work and visit the city.

It is extremely unfortunate that the National City of Culture Project has had such a contentious start especially since a very strong programme has already been put in place and following a very successful New Year’s Eve launch.  But it is now in Limerick’s interest that all sides come together and unite to make this project the absolute success that it deserves to be.

2014 still gives us the opportunity to turn a new page in telling the story of Limerick. It is time for local politicians, the artistic community and the business community to work with the City of Culture Board and local government.  The focus must steadfastly remain on delivering a professionally curated year-long programme that is open and accessible for everyone, that will leave a positive legacy and will live long in the memory for Limerick, Ireland and beyond.

It is important to remember that the City of Culture initiative is a year-long programme and its success needs be judged on the results of the full year.
