The Limerick Chamber of Commerce has voiced its disappointment over the impending closure of the International Rugby Experience, marking a missed opportunity for a valuable public amenity in collaboration with Limerick City and County Council and the JP McManus Trust. The closure comes despite efforts to secure the facility as a permanent tourist attraction.
The International Rugby Experience, a significant tourist asset located in Limerick city centre, is set to cease operations by Christmas. Opened just last year, the iconic six-floor red-brick building, funded by a €30 million gift from the JP McManus Foundation, was designed to celebrate Limerick’s famed love of rugby.
Despite projections of attracting 100,000 visitors, the venue drew only 60,000, prompting its decision to close. Efforts were made to gift the building to Limerick City and County Council, alongside a €1.2 million donation, to ensure its longevity as a civic space. However, a viable agreement could not be reached.
The Limerick Chamber underscores the potential loss to both the local community and economy, which was bolstered by nearly €8 million in visitor spending from the attraction. “We applaud the vision, ambition, and effort invested in establishing this iconic tourist attraction at the heart of our city. While recent developments have been disappointing, we remain dedicated to supporting future collaborations and opportunities to bolster the economic growth and prosperity of Limerick City and County.“
The council’s exhaustive efforts to integrate the site into Discover Limerick DAC were confirmed, yet substantial operational and capital funding requirements posed insurmountable challenges.
