M20 Limerick-Cork Motorway

Project Objectives

This joint campaign by Limerick and Cork Chambers was aimed at securing go-ahead for the M20, with the strategic objective of the motorway being formally included in Government’s capital programme.

Project Status

Together, the Chambers have successfully built a case for the M20 to be given Government go-ahead.

Targeting the National Development Plan (NDP) and Ireland 2040, the Chambers’ joint campaign provided evidence for the economic, social and transport needs for the motorway to be prioritised, uniting business across Munster in the process.

• Limerick and Cork Chambers jointly commissioned a Report by Indecon Economic Consultants and Red C Research on the socio-economic benefits of the M20 to the city regions along the Atlantic corridor.Read Report 

In February 2018, the M20 was listed as a key project to receive funding in the National Development Plan 2018-2027.

• The NDP states the M20 is ‘due to commence planning’ and its estimated completion date is 2027 (subject to appraisal, planning and procurement).
• The estimated cost of the M20 is €850 to €900 million.
• The appraisal process for the M20 will examine the inclusion of the Cork North Ring Road linking the N20 to Dunkettle.
