DIY Bovine AI Refresher 2nd April 2025

Limerick Chamber Skillnet, in conjunction with Munster Bovine, are delighted to offer this Department of Agriculture approved DIY AI Refresher course, delivered by a Munster Bovine.

  • Relevant trainer certification –

Dennis Howard MVB cert DHH – Vet responsible for delivery of theory days, technical content and supervision of practical training.
Dennis graduated from the veterinary college in UCD in 2002 and completed a post graduate certificate in dairy herd health in 2011. 17 years’ experience in mixed practice. Technical manager with Munster Bovine since 2018 with responsibility for training, monitoring and management of AI technicians, monitoring bull fertility and delivery of herd health programme.
Two experienced AI technicians are present to deliver the practical training  on farm.
 

  • Programme Content –

Theory session – 2 hours

  • Review anatomy of bovine reproductive tract.
  • Review oestrus cycle and reproductive physiology.
  • Reproductive tracts from abattoir – anatomy and practicing AI technique.
  • Review best practice for handling of frozen semen.
  • Using equipment – flasks, thawing units, guns, sheaths etc
  • Demonstration and practice of using equipment including thawing straws and loading AI guns.
  • Review best practice for successful use of frozen semen.

 
Practical session – 2 hours

  • Expert tuition from experienced technicians and veterinary supervisor.
  • 50 different cows available for the session.
