Limerick Chamber Joins Forces with Dell to Launch Schools Competition

Business studies students across Limerick were today encouraged to enter a unique competition entitled “Limerick Business Thru’ The Ages”. The competition details were unveiled today by the Limerick Chamber, the competition organiser, along with Dell, the lead sponsor.

The competition is being run by the Limerick Chamber as part of the organisation’s bicentennial programme. Limerick Chamber will celebrate its 200th anniversary through a year-long programme of special events in 2015 and the competition is set to be one of the highlight events.

The competition, which is being made possible through sponsorship by Dell and the support of LIT, is asking students to research a business or entrepreneur from a period of time over the last 200 years.  The competition has been designed to encourage awareness amongst students of the changing business landscape in Limerick over the last 200 years and how businesses need to adapt and evolve.

There are two competition categories – one for Junior Cycle students and another for Senior Cycle students.  The winning school for each category will receive a Dell Venue 11 Pro Tablet. Second and third-placed entries at each category will receive a Dell Venue 8 Pro Tablet.  Dell tablets will also be presented as a special innovation prize where teams demonstrate a unique innovative idea for future businesses.

Schools must register their interest in the competition and submit a proposal before 12 December 2014.  A Finals event will be held in LIT on 27 February 2015 where qualified teams will present their projects. The winning teams will be announced on the day.

Speaking at the launch in the Dell Limerick campus, Cathal Treacy, President Limerick Chamber, said, “Limerick Chamber will celebrate its 200th Anniversary in 2015 and we want our celebrations to be as inclusive as possible. As Limerick Chamber is all about business, it is fitting that we reach out to business studies students, our business leaders in the future.  I’m hopeful that this competition will give many students an appreciation of how the business landscape in Limerick has changed over the years while gaining insight into why companies need to constantly adapt and evolve to survive.”

Timmy O’Dwyer, Dell Limerick site leader said Dell was delighted to sponsor the competition. “Dell has been operating in Limerick for over 20 years. Over those years we have worked closely with both local schools and third level institutions to drive awareness about careers in the technology sector. As a company we regularly visit schools to enthuse students about a career in technology, we open our doors for schools to visit us and we also collaborate with LIT and UL to drive innovation amongst third level students. It’s an area we as a company are passionate about. When Limerick Chamber approached us with this competition idea we were delighted to get involved. I’m looking forward to seeing the proposals put together by the students and would encourage people to get involved.”

Audrey O’Keeffe, Limerick Branch Chairperson, Business Studies’ Teachers of Ireland, said, “The competition is a wonderful opportunity for Business Studies students to relate some of their learning from the curriculum to the real business world while appreciating the past and looking forward to the future. I would encourage as many students and teachers as possible to engage in this exciting opportunity.”
