Speaker Bio:
Prof. Alan Ahearne is Professor of Economics and Director of the Whitaker Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He is a Member of the Commission (that is, the Board of Directors) of the Central Bank of Ireland. He is also Chairman of the Central Bank’s Budget and Remuneration Committee and a member of the Risk Committee. He is Chairman of the Joint Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and Department of Finance Research Programme on the Macro-economy and Taxation. He has served as external advisor to the Strategy, Practice and Review Department of the International Monetary Fund, advising IMF senior management on how the Fund could better support the efforts of countries at all levels of income to boost growth and create jobs in the period ahead. Prior to coming to Galway in 2005, he was Senior Economist at the Federal Reserve Board (below) in Washington, DC, where he worked for seven years.
Carl Tannenbaum:
Carl Tannenbaum is the Chief Economist for The Northern Trust. In this role, Mr. Tannenbaum briefs clients and colleagues on the economy and business conditions, prepares the bank’s official economic outlook and participates in forecast surveys. He is a member of the bank’s investment policy committee, its capital committee, and its asset/liability management committee. Mr. Tannenbaum began his career in banking at LaSalle Bank/ABN AMRO, a global banking organization with $1 trillion in total assets. He served for more than 20 years there as the organization’s Chief Economist and Head of Balance Sheet Management. Mr. Tannenbaum is a member and past Chairman of the American Bankers Association’s Economic Advisory Committee, the National Association for Business Economics, the Conference of Business Economists, and the North American Asset/Liability Management Association. Mr. Tannenbaum holds an M.B.A. and a B.A. in finance and economics from the University of Chicago.
